A Great First at The Rising Sun

He had never picked up a fly rod before, but, for reason or reasons of his own, Mr Spencer Whitbread suddenly had the urge to do so – so did!

We tootled off to the Rising Sun Inn on the river Taw on a fine Wednesday morning, our sole intention being to gently introduce hi to the art of salmon fishing.

The river was running slightly coloured after a small, brief spate, but had dropped right back from 0.9m to 0.45.

Hut Pool on beat 1 makes a great classroom and Spencer was soon popping out a short line with no disturbance and fishing a fly through “hotspot 1” as we call it.

The fly of choice (my choice I hasten to add!!) was a gold-bodied willie gunn.

The result was this five pound 5lb 10oz spanking fresh sea trout! Not bad for your first fish ever, on your first run through a pool ever, on your first day fishing with a fly rod…..or any type of rod actually………EVER!
