THE RIVER LYD

The Lyd rises, as do many Devon rivers, high on Dartmoor and flows in a westerly direction to join the Tamar near Lifton. It is a small river at best but can produce excellent sea-trout fishing and small water salmon fishing of the highest quality. The brown tout and grayling are plentiful and wily and the scenerfy is beautiful.

After leaving Dartmoor near Lydford the course of the river takes in through some of the West Country’s most delightful woodland. It is this woodland that gives stretches of the Lyd such an intimate feel and whilst there one can truly feel like the only person on earth in the prevailing silence.

FLY FISHING ON THE LYD

The Arundell Arms – Lifton

http://www.arundellarms.com/fishing-holidays-devon/fishing-information

The Arundell Arms has 20 miles of fishing over 8 different rivers including the Tamar, Lyd, Wolf, Lew and Thrushell. There is some great salmon fishing on the Lyd.

They also have a few date set aside on the Endsleigh Beat of the Tamar (see Tamar page).

Two full-time guides work for the hotel – Tim Smith and David Pilkington (both AAPGAI) – and they are available for tuition.

The Sydenham Beat

This is one of the beats available through the Westcountry Angling Passport. It is a bit higher up than the Arundell Arms water, but is good fly water none the less.

The Passport Scheme is very well explained on this dedicated site.
