THE RIVER TAMAR

The Tamar is probably most famous for being the border between Devon and Cornwall, or as some Cornish dwellers would have it, between Cornwall and England!

Its source is only 3.5 miles from the North Cornish coast and it flows into the sea on the south Cornish coast at Plymouth Sound and the southern most crossing point is the famous rail bridge designed by one I K Brunel that has been carrying passenger and freight trains accross the border since 1859. The road bridge that runs parallel was opened in 1961 and is a toll road – but only on the way out of Cornwall.

The river has many tributaries including The Lynher, Inny, Ottery and Kensey, which, along with the main Tamar, actually form the bulk of East Cornwall’s salmon and sea-trout waters that are fisheable with the fly. The main tributaries on the Devon side are The Tavy, which is a major sea-trout and salmon fishery in its own right (see seperate entry under DEVON RIVERS) and the Lyd (see RIVER LYD).

FISHING THE TAMAR

There are quite a lot of fly fishing opportunities on the river, but many are on the upper river for brown trout. The Tamar and its tributaries are some of the few West Country streams that have a decent head of grayling as well as salmon and sea-trout and so this adds a slightly differnt weight to the importance of the system.

THE ARUNDELL ARMS

The Arundell Arms is the main fishing hotel on the river.

They have 20 miles of fishing over 8 different rivers including the Tamar, Lyd, Wolf, Lew and Thrushell. There is some great salmon fishing on the Lyd.

They also have a few date set aside on the Endsleigh Beat of the Tamar (see Tamar page).

Two full-time guides work for the hotel – Tim Smith and David Pilkington (both AAPGAI) – and they are available for tuition.

THE ENDSLEIGH FISHING CLUB BEATS

http://www.endsleigh-fishing-club.com/

This series of 6 beats are ideal for fly fishing and cover nearly 9 miles on both banks. This is a lower-middle river fishery and thus the river is quite broad and a double-handed rod can be used with confidence and to great effect in the Spring and Autumn. In the Summer a 10ft single-handed rod or a switch rod are ideal.

The water here is beautiful, as is the setting. It was once a private beat belonging to the big house, now a hotel (http://www.hotelendsleigh.com/), that was owned by the Duke of Bedford, but is now a club that offers day tickets at reasonable cost.
